Zojirushi NP-HBC10 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker Used By Grandma

This past weekend I decided to go visit my grandmother.  She is an 80 year old woman that lives on the Virginia/Tennessee border.  She always likes to get new things and surprises.  So I thought I would show her my Zojirushi NP-HBC10 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker.  If she likes it I will surprise her with one for Christmas.  With my girlfriend and her son as my co-pilots we make the drive down to grandma’s house.

When we get to my grandmas house we see her standing at the door as she always does.  She is happy to see us and loves company.  The first thing she does is looks at my rice cooker and asks, “What is that? Is it for me?”  She says this in her country accent with a long southern draw.  Before I can respond junior butts in and says,” it’s a rice cooker and we are going to show you how to use it!”  She responds slowly,” Well.”

After we settle in I go to my rice cooker and tell granny that it is a Japanese rice cooker. Junior lets her know that you can cook rice in it and it will stay hot all day.  This is true but I also let my granny know that it is a Zojirushi NP-HBC10 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker. I tell her that all you have to do is fill the cooker with rice using the included measuring cup; just fill the cooker to the lines inside the cooking pan.  As she does this my girlfriend gets the water needed for the cooker and she fills the cooker with the water.

As granny looks at the cooker she comments on the stainless steel look.  I let her know that is why I got it.  Then I explain to here about all the different rice you can cook but she could care less.  My granny only eats white rice; she buys Uncle Ben’s rice and that is what we put in the cooker.  I tell grandma that the cooker comes with a manual and all the temperature settings are in it for the different rice.  I show her how to turn it on and set it.  When she asks,” How long does it take to cook?” I let her know that it only takes about 30 minutes and once the rice is done it switches over to warmer mode.  Then the rice will stay warm all day if you want.  Granny liked this idea but it is way more than what she needs. She is a tiny woman and rarely eats.  When I told her it was easy to clean up and didn’t take much to clean it because of the Teflon coating she just nodded and smiled.

While the rice is cooking she begins to cook her liver and onions which I love.  With the gravy she makes it will be perfect for going over the perfectly cooked rice the Zojirushi NP-HBC10 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker
Rice in this rice cooker is perfect for the next day after it is cooked I tell her. She just says, “Well” and lifts the lid and studies how the cooker looks.

I know my grandma well enough that she may not be interested in the rice coming out of it but she liked the fact that it was a shiny, nice looking appliance.  I will just get it for her at Christmas so she will have something cool and sleek sitting on her new countertops that my mom got her.  She may not even use the cooker but at least it will be there to make perfectly cooked rice that stays warm all day in case she does decides to.
